When one thinks of wine, rarely does anyone think of it being served in a can.
This is exactly what co-founders Henry and Alex set out to accomplish when they created The Uncommon, the first canned wine in the UK while having sustainability in the forefront of their mission. For these close friends, they were eager to create wine that was great in taste and quality, but also consciously thought out. This led them to scour high and low for the best grapes in hopes of creating the highest quality of English wine for others to enjoy.
Henry and Alex are certainly playing by their own rules in breaking the norms of wine in order to bring about change in an innovative way. Being the first people to can wine in the UK, these two friends thrive on being underdogs and outsiders by knowing that their products speak for themselves. Challenging as it may be being game-changers in the industry, there are moments when they are walking through a park, and witness strangers enjoying their beautifully-designed wine in a can. That is the push they need to remind them that this is what it’s all about.
Although, let us be honest -- just from the first sip, it is hard not to want more!

What inspired you to start this business?
There was no wine out there that appealed to the more open-minded consumer. One that prefers quality and convenience over ceremony.
What keeps you going?
We both keep each other going. We push each and challenge each other and have fun doing so. We believe in what we are doing and if you have that belief, motivation is a natural bi-product
Who is your role model that gets you motivated as an entrepreneur?
There are a handful of successful and innovative drinks brands that have seen remarkable growth. We would obviously like The Uncommon to be hugely successful but I wouldn’t say we look up to anyone. We admire work ethic in people, but we thrive on being outsiders and underdogs. I help us come up with new ways of doing things.
What are some of your highlights/challenges since starting your business?
Being the first people to can wine in the UK. Seeing our cans on the shelves in Selfridges. Walking through the park and seeing strangers with our wine. Everyday is a challenge- we have had to teach ourselves everything from viticulture and oenology to law, accounting and sales
What are your hopes for your business in the future?
To be the UK’s leading wine brand and to continue to shake up the norm
What tips do you have for budding entrepreneurs?
Find a co-founder…it’s a lonely game otherwise. Have the confidence to build a team of people that are better than you at what they do.
Recommendations of books that you think helped you in your journey?
Zero to One, Multipliers, The Lean Start Up – these are a few good ones but don’t get too caught up them as we feel we can learn a lot from personal experiences along the way.
